The Purpose
The small bed beside the front entrance had no proper edge, so soil and mulch kept washing onto the walkway after every heavy rain. The owners wanted it to look neat, match the brick of the house and need very little upkeep.
The Challenge
There was not much room between the walkway and the foundation. The border had to hold the soil in place and still let water drain away from the house, without making the bed look bulky.
How we did it
The Steps We Took to Get It Right
- Stone Border
Built a low border with tumbled pavers set on a compacted base so it stays straight and level.
- Soil & Grading
Brought in fresh soil and sloped it slightly away from the foundation wall.
- Low-Maintenance Plants
Planted hardy perennials that come back every year and need little more than regular watering.
- Black Mulch
Finished with a thick layer of black mulch to hold moisture, keep weeds down and make the green stand out.
